The minister’s black veil has meaning but scare those around. The story should be taught in class because of the meaning that it brings. We all sin, and some of us hide behind our secrets instead of facing them head on. When we have secrets, we feel as though no one would find out thus giving us a reason to hide behind the truth. People hide their secret as long as they can to keep people from judging hem. We bask in the excitement of knowing others secrets so that we may have something to talk about. However, when it is our secret and sin that is out we hide and don’t want to show our faces. The Minister’s black veil shows courage in admitting that the preacher had sin and that he was carrying it around proudly not shamefully. Readers have had the story resonated because it shows to be proud of your sin. The story should be kept in the class and taught to others.

Modern day activism
Modern day activism is different than Douglas time period of activism because today’s era blacks and whites can riot together, learn together, and wed. In Frederick Douglas era none of those things would have happened. Blacks were not allowed to read, write, or mingle with whites. Yes, they had their rights but not like today. Movements back then had a great cause to them or meaning that they stood for. Todays movements are over anything and everything. Today’s movements is not for the whole people or class, it is so that people can have a voice over nonsense and say they are talking. Movements back in Douglas time had meanings to them, for instance, Joining of blacks and whites in school. Now a days people do movements and others are allowed to yell ridiculous things. Our movements are not as powerful as those that created pathways for us today. I think Mr. Frederick Douglas would think we are crazy for having so may rights and wanting still much more because we are not satisfied.
second guess president
Abraham Lincoln grew up like some of us did. Sickness and disease swept the towns where he lived and some people, family, and friends died. I cannot judge his background and compare it to the fact of the president seat. He struggled as a kid and as an adult he made a name for himself. he opened a store in New Salem and people came far and near to flock to him to hear the stories. Almost as if in todays society. There was nothing in his background that I can say made me look or think twice from when he was the president. Abraham Lincoln endured losing his mom to the milk sickness but he did not have a meltdown. He took the bad, pushed it to the side and made a name for himself.
scariest, horrifying
The figures of judges appeared with all white and they looked like judges. Poe was half conscious and to him the shapes on the wall were taking forms to him of angels and judges. The angels were amazing that he could imagine, going from good to evil. They appeared as angels to him and then took on a form with flames. This was very weird and scary but I was intrigued because the image of what was going on was clearly painted in my head. Who would have thought that something stated so well would have an effect on me. It is clear to me that angels are a sign of good or good faith but to have them turn in an instant to evil is weird. The way the word were on paper made me feel as though I was there and could see the same image. Weird and grotesque to me.
Fear factor
My fear factor is the not knowing when the world will come to an end. All of us enjoy our life but how many of us think will I be able to accomplish all the necessary tasks? Literally will the stove be turned off, what will be the cause of the end of days, or maybe will it destroy all things on earth or will some of us be able to escape harms way. The fear of not knowing what will happen to yourself, your family, associates, and home is a terrible feeling. Even though this is my biggest fear factor, I cannot allow myself to be hindered by the thought. I still have the thought of being in the middle of a game with my boys and bam total darkness surrounds all of us and none of us knows what comes with he darkness.
Traumatic event in Poe’s life
I believed Edgar Allen Poe became more screwed up and his writing was affected when his cousin died of tuberculosis and that disease not only took a family member from him but it took the woman that he wanted to make his wife. Poe was infatuated with his female cousin and she was a child still herself. When she passed away from tuberculosis, Poe was estranged. He made a poem to let whoever read it know that his love of his life will always be near him. Also, Edgar Allen Poe states that he lay beside her grave in the poem, this further let me know that something is really wrong with him mentally. The childhood Poe could not have made his life better. He lost his mother to the same disease as the woman he loved dearly died as well, all of this had to have a mental displacement within him. The events that happened to Poe in his childhood would have made me lash out or act out as a kid. He lost all the women that had ever cared for him in his life to the disease tuberculosis. Poe had to have felt alone in the world or as if he was cursed.
geniuses who can’t function
There is an associate of mine that does not know how to function in the “real world” and tends to want to be alone all the time. This associate of mine is a genius at helping others realize there mistakes and helps them to figure out their next valuable step in their life. Even though this person intervenes by camera skyping with their clients they do not like to be around other people. My associate is a loner and choose to only deal with her clients to make a living. They once stated that if she could live in a cave and her only friend was a bat, then they would be just fine with that. I never understood but all honesty, I never aske why they felt like this.
“wooden gun”
I agree with the “wooden gun” statement. It is true that we have a government and the people elected them, however once those people are in the seat majority of them use the system for and to its own ability. Today’s government is a prime example of what the statement is portraying. The system makes a mockery of itself and the system forgets that the public are the ones that are supposed to be first. The government seems to be behind a lot of things when you do your research. The government deceived those when doing the syphillis projects (Guatemala and Tuskegee). The system will explode if honesty along with integrity could exist. So yes the government would destroy itself if it was ever put to a “real” test however, deception is the key with them.
Emerson
I agree with Emerson when he said “to be great is to be misunderstood”. Once a person has made a big name or name in general for them self, the crowd that has been attracted to that person feels as though you no longer understand what they are going through or facing at the time. Some fanatic people feel as though you are talking to them only and no one else exist. Soon as you have made it clear to them that the statement was for everyone or you choose someone else over that fanatic fan then you are misunderstood in their eyes. They feel as though you played with their emotions. Also, someone can take a stance on something important to them like, litter cleanup or testing chemicals on animals/ animal rights and a person will call them crazy. “To be misunderstood” is how a person view what is in front of them, are you looking at the big picture, or the small one?
modern idea of individualism and personal responsibility
I feel as though society’s idea of individualism and personal responsibility runs side by side with one another. Some of us care for others and some of us do not care until someone’s bull crap intervenes in ones life and start having an effect on that particular person life. Society feel that as long as you are doing you that is totally fine and as long as I do me that is fine as well. It is my personal responsibility to (or whoever is involved at the time) to make sure that what ever it is that I choose to do not intervene or disrupts the next person life or rights. Once my life or ignorance disrupts someone else’s life then the problem exists. Individualism and personal responsibility goes together.
